"Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Go near to listen, rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools, who do not know that they do wrong. Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven, and you are on earth, so let your words be few. Much dreaming, and many words are meaningless. Therefore stand in awe of God!" (Ecclesiastes 5:1-2, 7).
"This passage of Scripture shows that worship of God from a repentant soul brings quietness and an awe of God. I think back on my years in sexual sin, and they were loud years, with much talking and teaching and making myself out to be somebody. All my many words were evidence that I was not in awe of God, but was instead taken with myself. But when God brought me low, and caused my heart to fear Him, I immediately shut up, and began being in awe of God. He was in heaven and I was on earth. I began seeing Him for Who He is, and myself for the loud-mouthed, irreverent man that I was.
Now I don't believe this Scripture is saying that because we are in awe of God we cannot talk. Some people are naturally more talkative than others, and do not necessarily sin when they do so. What these verses refer to is the loud and obnoxious man who feels that what he has to say is so important, and who does not revere the Lord.
So, true repentance evidences itself in the worship of God. It shows us the majestic deity of God, His holiness and power, grace and love, and His awesome character. When we begin to develop awe for Him, we listen more than we talk."
Today I read this verse and also the comment someone had made about the verse. This picture I think is not often seen in churches today. I'm talking about the quiet reverance for God. I can't think of a church where I've been able to go into and be quiet before God. When you walk into a church people are always talking or there's music playing. Hardly ever is it a place to go and just be quiet before God.
I don't think it's at all wrong that people at church want to talk to eachother but why aren't we quiet in the sanctuary before and after a service anymore?
I don't know that it's a big deal but that's just a question that came to me when I read this verse.
